In recognition of the increasing importance of protecting critical infrastructure, a new cybersecurity coalition called the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure (ACI) has been created.
The coalition, consisting of a large swath of industry titans like AT&T, ConEd, Southern Company, JP Morgan Chase, Xcel Energy, MasterCard, and more, aims to tackle the complex and evolving cybersecurity vulnerabilities facing infrastructure operators.
Snapshot of the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure
The Alliance for Critical Infrastructure was born out of a growing understanding among industry leaders and government agencies that a fragmented approach to cybersecurity is no longer sufficient. Simply put, the interconnected nature of critical infrastructure, spanning energy, water, transportation, healthcare, and communications, means that a vulnerability in one sector can have cascading effects across others.
The ACI’s core mission is clear: to foster a more resilient and secure critical infrastructure ecosystem through enhanced public-private collaboration. This involves proactively identifying, assessing, and mitigating cyber risks, as well as developing robust response and recovery capabilities. The alliance aims to serve as a central hub for information sharing, best practice development, and the promotion of innovative cybersecurity solutions.
To achieve its mission, the ACI is pursuing a multi-pronged strategy. First, it emphasizes strengthening information-sharing mechanisms between government entities and private sector operators. This includes creating secure platforms for timely threat intelligence exchange and facilitating joint exercises and simulations to test response plans.
Second, standardized cybersecurity frameworks and guidelines tailored to the unique challenges of critical infrastructure will be developed to ensure a baseline level of security across all sectors.
Third, recognizing that human capital is as crucial as technological defenses, a skilled workforce will be developed through cybersecurity training initiatives, educational programs, and talent development partnerships.
Finally, the ACI aims to advocate for supportive policies and regulations that encourage investment in cybersecurity and promote a culture of security awareness throughout critical infrastructure organizations.
The bottom line: By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure is forging a vital new partnership to protect the very foundations of our society.
