Upcoming El Niño Predicted to be Strongest in Decades

Uh oh, I just read that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a warning about the 2026-2027 El Niño. In a nutshell, it could get ugly. For today’s post I wanted to talk a little bit about what exactly El Niño is, and why the near-term outlook is bleak.
What is El Niño and Why is a Strong One Expected?
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean, which disrupts normal weather patterns globally.
Under neutral conditions, trade winds blow west along the equator, pushing warm water toward Asia. During El Niño, these winds weaken or even reverse, allowing warm water to surge eastward toward the Americas. This shift alters the jet stream, often bringing heavy rains to the southern U.S. (and South America), while causing severe droughts in Australia and Indonesia.
As we move toward the 2026-2027 season, meteorologists are sounding the alarm. Current atmospheric modeling and oceanic temperature profiles suggest this upcoming event could be the strongest in decades, potentially rivaling or surpassing the “Super El Niños” of 1997-1998 and 2015-2016. Several factors contribute to this dire prediction.
First is the “recharge” phase of the ocean, where heat from the western Pacific’s sub-surface layers migrates eastward. Second, the global baseline temperature is significantly higher now than it was during previous major events. Because El Niño sits on top of a long-term warming trend caused by climate change, the “starting point” for oceanic temperatures is higher, making it easier for the event to reach record-breaking intensity.
If these trends continue, the 2026-2027 El Niño will not just be a weather event; it will be a global climate disruptor, potentially triggering extreme heatwaves, intensified storm seasons, and significant shifts in agricultural yields worldwide. For this reason, utilities in all sectors, as always, need to ensure they are prepared for the worst. This means having an accurate, up-to-date plan, and conducting exercises and drills regularly to practice executing the plan.
