I just read an interesting article from Power Magazine about cable rejuvenation – a cost-effective method that electric utilities can use to boost grid reliability.  It involves injecting a fluid, such as a dielectric fluid or siloxane fluid, into the insulation of medium-voltage underground cables.  Utilities can use cable rejuvenation to extend the life of the cable, avoid costly replacements, and improve the reliability of their grid.

The Nuts and Bolts of Cable Rejuvenation

As underground cables age, the insulation degrades due to electrical stress, thermal stress, and moisture.  This degradation can lead to partial discharge activity, which can eventually cause the cable to fail.  Cable rejuvenation fills the voids created by this degradation and restores the dielectric strength of the insulation, thereby suppressing partial discharge activity and preventing cable failures.

There are two main types of cable rejuvenation fluids: dielectric fluids and siloxane fluids. Dielectric fluids are typically mineral oil-based and have been used for cable rejuvenation for many years.  Siloxane fluids are silicone-based and offer several advantages over dielectric fluids.  Siloxane fluids are more resistant to moisture and have a higher dielectric strength.  They are also more environmentally friendly.

The process involves injecting the fluid into the cable insulation through specialized injection ports.  The fluid then permeates the insulation, filling the voids and restoring its dielectric strength.  The injection process is typically performed while the cable is energized, so there is no need to take the cable out of service.

According to the article, the process can extend the life of underground cables by 40 or more years.  This can save utilities a significant amount of money compared to replacing the cables and can also help improve grid reliability by reducing the number of cable failures in the first place.
